Minimizing Waste at Another Gorgeous Evening

Another Gorgeous Evening is our favorite night of the year, but with all the delicious food and drinks comes an abundance of waste. This year, we sought to send as little waste as possible to the landfill. Thanks to New Terra Compost, we achieved our goal! New Terra joined us for the evening with compost and recycling bins in tow.

Overall, we diverted 128 gallons of compostable products and 90 pounds of food waste from the landfill to active composting piles. 18 pounds of cans and non-compostable cardboard were also recycled. These waste products will sit in New Terra’s composting piles to begin the journey back to the soil as microbial communities get to work decomposing the waste. Once the process is complete, the compost, now rich in nutrients, is returned to residents, partner organizations, and community gardens.

So, what was left? Roughly 2 gallons of trash to be sent to the landfill. With over 300 people in attendance, we were thrilled with the reduction in landfill waste. Thank you to New Terra and everyone who attended the event. Next year we have set a lofty goal to have even less waste!
